Food Handling and Barista Coffee Course Information

What will I study?

Units of Competency:

​

SITXFSA005 – Use hygienic practices for food safety (also known as SITSS00068 – Food Handling Skill Set)*

​

SITHFAB025 – Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee

​

SITXFSA005 is a Prerequisite for SITHFAB025, meaning you must study Food Handling before studying SITHFAB025 Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee.

​

Credit transfer is available for those who have already studied SITXFSA005 or equivalent.

How will I study?

Study will be mostly classroom based, with one online webinar. Our barista training will take place at the Coffee training room at Veneziano Coffee, with state of the art barista equipment.

How long will I study for?

The course will run for 3 weeks, with a 6 hour class each Friday.  There will also be a 1 hour webinar in the 2nd week.

You will be expected to do some self-study at home.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be a mix of practical observation and written work.

What will I recieve at the end?

On completion of the course, you will gain knowledge and skills in:

  • Safe food handling

  • Work Safety

  • The origins of coffee

  • Using and cleaning an espresso machine

  • Making black coffees

  • Making milk coffees

  • Understanding the different types of coffee

You will receive statements of attainment for both units if you complete the units successfully.

Please note that the State and Commonwealth government funds the delivery of SITXFSA005 as the Food Handling Skill Set (SITSS00068). SITHFAB025 does not receive any government funding. Both units are current as of June 2022.

How do I enrol?

All students who want to study at FLN will have to so a pre-assessment interview and assessment.  This is to work out your eligibility and capabilty. It will only take a few minutes.
